“Hiya, Ben!” Columbo said to FBI agent Ben Parnell. “How’s it goin’?”

He was reluctant to ask Ben Parnell how it was going, because he knew Parnell would tell him.

“Not good, Columbo. Not good. Y’ know, they just keep piling it on us. I mean, like, in this office we got three agents less than we had two years ago, and the case load is up eighteen percent. And of course the damned hemorrhoids still pain me, and my migraines are back.” He shook his head. “I’m gonna retire and move to Arizona.”

He was Columbo’s age but looked older. His yellow hair, always thin, was all but gone except above his ears and around the back of his neck. His complexion was pink. He wore silver-framed glasses.

“Sorry to hear it, Ben. Me, I’ve thought about retirement. I’ve got enough years in. But what’d I do with myself. Mrs. C says I’d drive her nuts, sittin’ around the house. She’d want me to take courses at one of the universities, learn art or literature or psychology or somethin’. I don’t know. I think I’ll keep pluggin’ away while my health is good.”

“That’s one thing you’ve got goin’ for you: good health—though you really ought to get more exercise,” Parnell said lugubriously. “Anyway, what can the FBI do for the LAPD today?”

“I need to talk to ya about retired agents living in the L.A. area,” said Columbo. “There may be nothing in what I’ve got in mind, but it might be helpful, too. You guys keep files on retired guys?”

“Yeah. Sometimes they’ve got information we can really use. I guess there’d be fifty retired agents living in the county, more in the counties around here.”

“Can you give me a list of them, Ben?”

“Don’t see why not. Sure. Yeah, I can give you a list. Can I ask what for?”

“I wanta use it to see if it jogs somebody’s memory.”
